Laguna Beach To Provide Lot For Overnight Stays

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― Starting this week, homeless people in Laguna Beach will be told to park their cars, campers and sleeping gear in a designated area away from the beach.

The city council has allocated $235,000 to convert a parking lot on Laguna Canyon Road into a legal place for overnight occupancy. It opens Thursday.

Laguna Beach will pay three local charities to operate the shelter through June.

In addition, the city will close its beaches from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to everyone but runners, walkers, divers and people fishing.

Like many coastal cities, Laguna Beach sees an influx of people who live in their vehicles or on the beach.
