Officials say heavy holiday traffic and bad weather over the rest of the nation helped lengthen the lines and delays Saturday at Los Angeles International Airport.
Fog in Chicago caused three-hour delays, said Katherine Alvarado of Los Angeles World Airports.
"With so many people traveling this weekend, longer check-in times are expected," Alvarado said.
At some LAX terminals, people were lined up outside and it reportedly took an hour just to check in.
Nearly 2 million people are expected to pass through LAX between Friday and Jan. 2, up 3 percent over last year's Christmas-New Year holiday period.
At LA/Ontario International Airport, more than 225,000 passengers are expected, a 5 percent jump over last year.
The busiest travel days are expected to be Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and Jan. 2, when airlines are forecasting mostly full flights.
Airport officials said passengers should arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international travel, particularly during peak hours of 6 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
With winter storms affecting some portions of the country, travelers are also urged to contact their airlines to check flight times.
