LAUSD To Unveil Non-Teaching Retirement Plans

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Los Angeles Unified School District officials are expected to release details Monday on a plan to offer LAUSD workers in non-teaching positions early retirement in order to save hundreds of jobs and delay layoff notices for 2,600 district employees.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia and Blanca Gallegos, spokeswoman for SEIU Local 99, plan to unveil the the retirement package details at a late-morning news conference.

The plan impacts about 2,500 workers is expected to be similar to the early retirement incentive package already offered to teachers and principals.

Under the early retirement plan, the sending of layoff notices for all classified staff would be delayed by one month, until June 18, to account for
those taking early retirement, according to the school district.

On April 14, the district's Board of Education voted to cut nearly 5,400 positions in hopes of closing a deficit of nearly $600 million in the budget for the coming school year.

The exact number of layoffs was anticipated to be lower, depending on the number of employees opting for early retirement and the use of state and federal stimulus funds to maintain jobs.
