L.A. Schools Chief: No Midyear Teacher Layoffs

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The Los Angeles schools superintendent has decided there will be no midyear teacher layoffs despite California's budget crisis.

Ramon Cortines announced Friday that he will not use authority granted by the Board of Education last week to send out layoff notices to nearly 2,300 teachers.

Cortines said there is a lack of clear information from Sacramento so he made the decision based on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest proposal, which includes more flexibility for school districts to deal with economic hardship.

The superintendent warns that the nation's second-largest school district still faces difficult cuts. A plan being prepared for the board calls for layoffs at every level of the district in July.
