The Los Angeles school board has voted to buy out the final two years of its contract with the embattled district superintendent.
The board voted 5 to 2 on Tuesday to buy out the contract with David L. Brewer III. The severance package is estimated to be worth about $500,000.
Brewer said he will serve until the end of the year.
The former Navy admiral, who had no experience as an educator before joining the district, came under fire by critics who call him an ineffective figurehead.
Brewer, however, had refused to step down and recently hinted that racism was behind the rising criticism of his leadership of the nation's second-largest school district. Brewer is black.
Supporters said Brewer is being unfairly targeted for problems he can't control, including state budget cuts to public education.
