Public Safety Committee Confirms Charlie Beck

City Council Must Vote On Nov. 17

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― The City Council's Public Safety Committee Monday unanimously confirmed the nomination of Charlie Beck to become the next chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The Los Angeles City Council must still vote to confirm Beck on Nov. 17.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa last week picked 56-year-old Beck to replace Chief William Bratton who stepped down on Oct. 31.

Beck is a 32-year police veteran who has been serving as the LAPD's chief of detectives.

Beck's new job comes at a time of severe budget crisis.

The Mayor and City Council agreed to maintain the ranks of the LAPD at 9,963 officers, instead of expanding the force and the opening of a new jail in Downtown has been delayed because the LAPD cannot hire enough officers to staff it.

Enrollment to the Police Academy has been suspended through December and the police officers' union agreed to forego salary increases for two years and convert overtime pay into time-off in order to avoid furloughs and lay-offs.

Beck has vowed to crack down on gangs and fight terrorism.
