Justice Is Blind And Broke! Why Courts Are Closed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The Los Angeles Superior Court system will substantially reduce operations Wednesday as part of a planned furlough day program in response to the deepening statewide financial crisis.

The furlough days are planned for the third Wednesday of each month till next June.

Most courthouses in the system will operate at least one courtroom to hear custody arraignments, felony bench warrants and other court business.

The furloughs days amount to about $18 million in savings per year and were put in place to avoid permanent court closures and layoffs court officials said.

Some court employees will be on hand Wednesday morning at the downtown courthouse to hand out fliers setting out their view of furlough days.

In addition, clerks' offices will offer limited services, including acceptance of fines and fees.

Papers may be filed in the main Clerk's Office downtown by leaving them in a secure drop box.

However, no review of filings will take place and no copies will be made by the office staff.

Payments of fines and fees will be accepted through secured drop boxes only, but no receipts will be issued Wednesday.

Jurors are not expected to report to any Los Angeles Superior courthouse
Wednesday, with the exception of a limited number of jurors who will be called to report to the jury assembly room on the 11th floor of the Criminal Courts Building downtown.

Regular court service is expected to resume Thursday.
