L.A. May Ban Smoking In Outdoor Dining Areas
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
Another Los Angeles smoking bastion may be lost.
Outdoor dining areas are now the target of an anti-smoking law proposed by the city's arts and parks committee. Smoking would be banned within 10 feet of any outdoor establishment that serves food.
Bars with outdoor areas and other 18-years-and-older venues would be exempt.
If the City Council approves, the law could be in place this summer.
Councilman Tom LaBonge, the committee chairman, says it's getting easier to enforce smoking bans because restaurant customers are demanding it.
Refuges for smokers have been dwindling over the years. State law bans smoking in restaurants, bars and other workplaces and Los Angeles prohibits smoking on beaches and within 25 feet of playgrounds, bleachers and fields.
