King Harbor Faces Closure After New Report
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
A troubled south Los Angeles hospital is facing an uncertain future after new reports of sub-quality care renewed fears that the facility would fail a critical inspection next month and be forced to close.
County supervisors heard from health department officials Tuesday as they struggled to explain why major lapses at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital persist despite months of efforts at reform.
A US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services report found that 17 patients of 60 cases between February and June had received substandard care at King-Harbor, and inspectors declared patients were in "immediate jeopardy."
Department of Health Services director Dr. Bruce Chernof says he, too, is dismayed by the findings, but says they are a chance to make needed fixes.
