Schwarzenegger Pledges To Keep King-Drew Running

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Los Angeles County supervisors are saying they support a plan to hand over management of the embattled Martin Luther King Junior/Drew Medical Center to a nearby public facility with a better track record.

The hospital's fate was put in peril last week when federal regulators announced they would yank critical funding at the end of the year because of repeated lapses in patient care.

Supervisors say they're considering having nearby Harbor-UCLA Medical Center manage the troubled hospital.

Some officials have proposed finding a private operator to take over the hospital, but others have warned that negotiations with a private company could be impractical because of the tight time frame.

The county Department of Health Services is set to release its recommendations Tuesday.

State officials say they'll assist the county once it chooses a plan.

Governor Schwarzenegger pledged yesterday to do what he could to keep King-Drew running.
