A Kern County woman mauled by a bear underwent 10 hours of surgery and is expected to recover.
A friend reports 57-year-old Allena Hansen was "lucid, active and probably pretty sore" after undergoing surgery yesterday for serious cuts to her head and face.
August Dunning says he called her hospital room in Los Angeles last night and spoke to her son.
Dunning says he heard his friend talking in the background.
Authorities say wildlife trackers and game wardens will use dogs to hunt the bear, which will be killed if caught.
Hansen has a ranch in the tiny rural community of Twin Oaks, near Caliente.
Dunning says Hansen was walking in heavy underbrush on her property with her dogs when she was attacked by a brown bear that could have weighed 200 pounds, Dunning speculates Hansen's English mastiff may have tried to defend her because it suffered some scratches. An Irish wolfhound was unhurt.
After yesterday's attack, Hansen drove herself three miles to a fire station and was airlifted to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
