Kenneth O. Garner, LAPD Deputy Chief, Dies At 53

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Los Angeles police officials said Deputy Chief Kenneth O. Garner, who oversaw a string of communities stretching from south of downtown to the harbor area, has died. He was 53.

Garner died Sunday morning at his home. A cause of death has not been determined, but longtime friend Carl McGill, president of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles County Inc., says it might have been a heart attack.

Garner, a native of Hot Springs, Ark., had served with the department for 31 years.

Before his promotion to deputy chief in 2007, he served stints as commanding officer of the department's transit bus division and as commander of its personnel department, among other duties.

He was appointed commanding officer of the department's South Bureau in March 2008.
