Autopsy Expected For Girl Fatally Hit By Boat

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― An autopsy is expected to be performed Wednesday on an 11-year-old girl who died after being hit by a boat while participating in a junior lifeguard training exercise off Huntington Beach.

Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says Allysa Squirrell died at a hospital Tuesday after being taken there with severe injuries.

The Laguna Hills girl was among two dozen junior lifeguards participating in a "speed drop," which trains lifeguards to quickly reach swimmers in distress.

The group was dropped in the ocean, and the driver of the lifeguard boat was circling to pick them up.

Amormino says the water was choppy, and it's likely the boat driver did not see the girl.

Wednesday officials reported that the girl was likely cut by the boat's propeller causing massive trauma to her back and one leg.
