Junior Lifeguard Trainee Hit By Boat, Dies

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― An 11-year-old girl has died after being hit by a boat while participating in a junior lifeguard training exercise off Huntington Beach.

Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Allysa Squirrell died at a hospital Tuesday after being taken there with severe injuries.

The Laguna Hills girl was among two dozen junior lifeguards participating in a "speed drop," which trains lifeguards to reach swimmers in the shortest amount of time. The group was dropped in the ocean and the driver of the lifeguard boat was circling to pick them up.

Amormino says the water was choppy, and it's likely the boat driver did not see the girl.
