Ex-Con Pleads Guilty To Shooting Police With AK-47
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
An ex-convict has pleaded guilty to opening fire on two Los Angeles police officers with an AK-47.
Jose Mercado Perez Jr. pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of assault on a peace officer with an assault rifle and one count of assault with an assault rifle on a civilian.
Deputy District Attorney Frank Tavelman says two attempted murder charges will be dismissed as part of the plea deal.
The 33-year-old Perez is expected to be sentenced to 70 years in state
prison in September.
Perez fired at two officers after he was pulled over on Aug. 12, 2006.
One officer was shot three times and nearly lost his hand.
The other officer was struck in the face by broken glass.
Perez was convicted of robbery in 1995.
