Retired Cop Certain Businessman Will Be Convicted
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) ―
A retired Los Angeles police detective who stayed on the trail of an infamous 1981 killing says he's confident a Japanese businessman will be convicted of the crime and sent to prison for life.
Jimmy Sakoda spent years with the LAPD and later as a district attorney's investigator trying to bring Kazuyoshi Miura to trial for the murder of his wife in downtown L.A.
The 60-year-old Miura claimed robbers shot him and his wife.
Miura was found guilty in a Japanese court but the verdict was overturned a decade ago. He was re-arrested in the American territory of Saipan a week ago and will stand trial in California for murder and conspiracy.
At a news conference Saturday, Sakoda, now 72, said he always believed Miura was the case's prime suspect.
He calls the arrest on U.S. soil after so many years "very satisfying."
