Shaw's Family Proposes Law To Help Curb Violence

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The parents of a high school football star killed in a gang shooting want the Los Angeles City Council to require police to arrest some illegal immigrants.

The father of 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw Junior argued Tuesday that a gang member charged with shooting his son last month was in the country illegally.

A 1979 police order bars officers from enforcing federal immigration laws but a proposed "Jamiel's law" would require officers to hunt out illegal immigrants who appear to be gang members.

Anita Shaw, who was called home from Iraq after her son died, told the council it was a "shame" Jamiel wasn't safe in the United States while she was defending the country overseas.
