A UC Irvine dispatcher under investigation to determine if he took pictures of unsuspecting male water polo players from 14 high schools for posting on gay-oriented Web sites was placed on leave Wednesday, officials said.
Scott Cornelius was put on paid administrative leave to avoid conflicts and help the investigation progress, UCI Police Chief Paul Henisey told the Orange County Register.
Because the probe involves a person employed by the university, the probe is being conducted by an outside agency which will do an independent investigation, UCI's Cathy Lawhon said.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office is also looking into whether posting the photos, which were taken at water polo games considered in
the public domain, is illegal.
According to the Register, the dispatcher may have used an alias to work
as a sports photographer.
Lawhon said she did not know how long the probe will take.
