Irvine Safest Big City In US For 4th Straight Year

Thousand Oaks Ranks 4th

IRVINE, Calif. The city of Irvine is the safest city in the country for the fourth straight year for communities with populations over 100,000, according to FBI statistics.

The next four safest cities, in declining order, were Gilbert, Ariz.; Bellevue, Wash.; Thousand Oaks, and Cary, N.C.

"For Irvine to be recognized as the nation's 'safest big city' for four years in a row is an extraordinary honor," Irvine Mayor Beth Krom said.

"This distinction reinforces the value of our investment in public safety, and reflects the high standards and professionalism exemplified by our police officers," Krom said.

The designation was based on FBI data compiled from January through December of 2007 on the crimes of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson.
