Indicted Orange County Sheriff Returns To Work

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― Indicted Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona is back at work after two months off the job to work on his legal defense. Sheriff's Department spokesman Damon Micalizzi says Carona was spending Monday attending meetings on jail overcrowding.

Carona announced he was taking 60 days of paid leave on Nov. 9, shortly after he, his wife Deborah, and his alleged mistress were indicted in a federal corruption case.

The indictment alleges the sheriff took nearly $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks. Undersheriff Jo Ann Galisky took over the department when Carona began his leave. The Sheriff's Department said she would continue overseeing day-to-day operations after Carona's return.
