The union representing LAPD officers says more training in crowd control tactics will help avoid the "kind of missteps" seen in the May 1 clash with immigration reform demonstrators.
The L.A. Police Protective League says budget cutbacks are to blame for lapses in training and called for "constant, updated" training procedures.
The union's recommendations come as police Chief William Bratton prepares to deliver an investigative report into the melee to the civilian Police Commission Tuesday morning.
Bratton has acknowledged that a breakdown in command and communication led to the clash in which riot police struck demonstrators and journalists with batons and fired rubber bullets.
