Authorities found nearly 100 starving horses at a horse rescue facility in Pearlblossom, prompting the arrest of the manager on suspicion of animal cruelty.
Janis Damiani, 57, was arrested Monday by officials Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control officers. Damiani, who manages the Equus Sanctuary, is being held on $20,000 bail, deputy director Michelle Roache said.
About a dozen horses had to be euthanized, while other horses appeared to be severely malnourished.
"There was limited available water and no food available on the property," Roache said. "Most of the horses were in desperate need of medical treatment and care. We are hoping to rehabilitate these horses and get them into loving homes as soon as possible."
Volunteer Roland Vincent says the charges are false because most of the horses are old -- in their 30s -- and never missed a meal and always got watered.
Roache said anyone interested in adopting or fostering the horses can call (562) 658-2000.
