A charter bus that may have had brake problems crashed Wednesday into a car and skidded onto the grounds of a Hollywood church, leaving 19 people with injuries -- none of them life-threatening, authorities said.
The bus crashed about 10:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Gower Street, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
The charter bus carrying 40 passengers en route to a "Dr. Phil" taping had just exited the Hollywood (101) Freeway on Gower Street when the driver was unable to stop on the downhill grade, Humphrey said.
"It's a very steep descent," he said.
The female driver told authorities the brakes failed to stop the bus, which hit a car before hitting a fence on the grounds of Hollywood Presbyterian Church, Humphrey said.
The bus then knocked down one tree and hit another, stopping before it hit a church building, Humphrey said.
Firefighters had to free the driver from the bus. She and 18 other people, including the car's driver, were transported for hospital treatment, but none of the injuries were life-threatening, Humphrey said.
The charter bus was coming from Ventura County, Humphrey said.
