Fatal Accident Shuts Down Hollywood Boulevard

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A driver speeding away from Los Angeles police has killed two pedestrians as they tried to cross Hollywood Boulevard.

Police spokeswoman Karen Smith says Sunday night's deaths of a man and woman stemmed from a chase that began when police spotted a man driving recklessly and tried to pull the car over. The driver instead led officers on a chase to the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Wilcox, where car crashed into the two.

The victims both were in their late 30s. Their names have not been released.

A witness told a local broadcast station that the victims were holding hands and crossing the street when the driver, with officers behind him, ran a red light and hit the couple.

Smith says the driver has been arrested.

Hollywood Boulevard remains shut down at the crash scene. Police say they expect it could stay closed until midmorning Monday.
