USC Student Pleads No Contest In Baby Dumping Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A college student whose newborn baby was found dead in a Los Angeles trash bin has pleaded no contest to child endangerment after failed efforts to try her for murder.

Holly Ashcraft, 23, of Montana, entered the plea Tuesday. Attorneys say she'll be sentenced to time served -- 30 days in jail and 695 days of electronic monitoring.

A homeless man found the body of Ashcraft's baby boy in October 2005 behind a cafe near the University of Southern California, which suspended her.

Prosecutors claim the baby was alive when Ashcraft abandoned him and originally filed a murder charge -- but it was dismissed four times.

Ashcraft's attorney says the child may have been stillborn.
