14-Year-Old Brain Dead In Gang Shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A 14-year-old girl is brain dead after she was accidentally shot in the head in what Los Angeles police are calling a gang-related incident. A 30-year-old man also was wounded.

LAPD spokeswoman Karen Smith says a 16-year-old boy has been arrested and is accused of the shooting.

The boy was standing on a street corner in the Highland Park neighborhood Monday afternoon when he got into a dispute with 30-year-old Fabian Aguirre, who had pulled up in a vehicle. Smith says the boy pulled a handgun and fired several shots, striking Aguirre in the arms. He is hospitalized and expected to recover.

But a bullet also struck the 14-year-old -- who was a passenger in a nearby sport utility vehicle -- in the head.
