5 Vehicles Destroyed In Hawthorne Garage Fire
HAWTHORNE, Calif. (CBS) ―
A fire in the garage of a two-story Hawthorne apartment complex destroyed five vehicles, authorities said.
The blaze broke out around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 12500 block of Oxford Avenue, near West El Segundo Boulevard, said a Los Angeles County fire dispatcher.
"Flames came through a garage opening and lapped into a bedroom of a second-floor unit above the carport," said Los Angeles County Fire Battalion Chief Gary Aalberts.
"Luckily the fire in the bedroom was held in check by an activated sprinkler system," Aalberts said.
About 25 firefighters knocked down the flames by 11:46 p.m., the dispatcher said.
No one was injured in the fire, but "five vehicles were completely destroyed." Aalberts said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
