Man Fatally Shot By Police In Hawthorne
HAWTHORNE, Calif. (CBS) ―
An investigation was under way Wednesday into a fatal shooting by Hawthorne police responding to a domestic violence call.
The shooting occurred at 132nd Street and Doty Avenue at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy Johnie Jones of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.
The officers went to an apartment complex at the location in response to a domestic violence complaint, Hawthorne Police Sgt. Jim Royer said.
When they arrived, officers heard gunshots coming from inside the complex, he said, adding that a man armed with a handgun then walked outside.
"He was shooting at his girlfriend as he was leaving the apartment and was confronted by officers," Royer told the Daily Breeze. "He had a gun in his hand and they shot him."
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital where he died, Jones said.
No one was injured by the suspect's gunfire, Royer said.
