Twenty-eight Los Angeles firefighters will leave for Houston Saturday to get ready for Hurricane Gustav to come ashore.
California Task Force 1, consisting of members of the LAFD's Urban Search and Rescue division, are set to depart for Houston no later than 10 a.m. and arrive in Houston within 36 hours of then, according to the department.
The storm, a Category 4 hurricane with top winds of about 155 mph, may pick up steam over the warm gulf and come ashore next week.
New Orleans officials have arranged for 70 buses to get people out of the city if the storm hits there.
The LAFD deployment is part of Federal Emergency Management Agency's mobilization of urban search-and-rescue teams to the Gulf.
