Deputies Shoot, Kill Gunman At O.C. Mall

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities say a robbery suspect was shot and killed by deputies after he opened fire at an Orange County mall Sunday.

Department spokesman Ryan Burris says deputies responded to a robbery in progress at a jewelry store in The Shops at Mission Viejo just before 5:30 p.m.

The suspect, disguised with a wig, shot at deputies when they confronted him on the second story of a parking structure. Deputies returned fire and struck the man.

The suspect was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and later died. His identity was withheld pending notification of family.

Nobody inside the mall was hurt.

The mall was shut down but is expected to reopen Monday.
