Authorities ID Man Killed In Sherman Oaks Fire

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. (CBS) ― Authorities Monday identified a 63-year-old man who suffered fatal burn injuries in a Sherman Oaks apartment building fire that remains under investigation.

Robert Speer died at the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital about 1 p.m. Sunday, about 11 hours after sustaining second- and third-degree burns, Capt. Ed Winter of the coroner's office said.

The fire on the top floor of the three-story building at 15248 Dickens St. broke out around 2 a.m. Sunday and was knocked down about 30 minutes later, said Diana Igawa, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman.

Two patients were treated at the scene: a woman for smoke inhalation, and a 3-year-old child for a possible asthma-related condition, Igawa said.

The fire burned two apartments and displaced eight people, she said.

Fire officials did not release a damage estimate.
