L.A. Zoo Reopens After Griffith Park Fire

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Zoo reopened Monday as investigators probe the cause of a Griffith Park brushfire that forced the evacuation of 4,000 visitors and threatened a breeding facility for endangered California condors Sunday.

No one was injured in the blaze, which burned through 25 acres of dry brush and was declared knocked down at 3 p.m. The fire never reached the zoo, but officials evacuated the facility as a precaution.

Flames came within 1,000 feet of the condor area, on the zoo's secluded western edge, prompting officials to move 20 birds, including five chicks, three juveniles and two King vultures, to a safer, more central location. The birds are being moved back to their facility today.

The cause of the fire is "under active investigation," Los Angeles fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
