On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission has started taking bids from contractors who will shore up Griffith Park's charred hillsides, preventing slides.
According to a city report, the plan will award a $1 million contract to a company that will cover about 400 acres with hydro-mulch -- a slurry of wood and straw mulch that does not contain any seeds, which will allow plants to grow back naturally.
A wild fire broke May 8 -- just east of the Hollywood sign -- and burned about 800 acres, or about a fifth of the urban park, over four days. Afterwards, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced a $50 million emergency repair plan for the park over the next 10 years.
