The policy will cover the costs of rebuilding homes so that they are fit for the latest enviromental standards.
CBS
Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. will offer California's first "green" homeowners insurance policy, which will cover the costs of using environmentally friendly products for repairs, Insurance Commissioner
Steve Poizner announced today in Los Angeles.
The policy, which will be available beginning Aug. 1, will cover the costs of rebuilding homes to the latest environmental standards after a loss,
Poizner said.
"Innovative products like these are a win-win for consumers and the
environment, lowering energy bills and cutting consumption," Poizner said.
Among other things, the policy will provide up to $25,000 for a
Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design-certified architect to oversee the rebuilding of a damaged home.
The new policy will also pay for repairs with materials such as Energy
Star-rated appliances and equipment, Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood, non-toxic paints and water-saving plumbing fixtures.
It will also pay to have debris removed from a damaged home recycled
instead of sent to a landfill.
