LA Fire Official Pleads Not Guilty To Beating Dog

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) ― A Los Angeles County assistant fire chief has pleaded not guilty to beating his neighbor's puppy so badly it had to be euthanized.

Glynn Johnson entered his plea to felony animal cruelty Tuesday in Riverside Superior Court.

Johnson is accused of beating a 6-month-old German shepherd mix with his fist and a 12-pound rock on Nov. 3.

Johnson says he was defending himself from the dog that allegedly bit his thumb and wouldn't let go.

He says he broke a thumb and needed stitches after the puppy attacked him on his own property in Riverside.

Also on Tuesday, the dog's owners, Jeff and Shelley Toole, filed a lawsuit against Johnson for the loss of the dog.

Johnson faces four years in prison if convicted.

He is free on $10,000 bail.

He has been placed on administrative leave.
