Gay Rights Leaders Concede Passage Of Prop. 8

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Gay rights leaders are conceding that California's same-sex marriage ban has passed.

News outlets, including The Associated Press, had projected early Wednesday passage of Proposition 8, but because there were still ballots being counted, gay marriage supporters said they weren't ready to concede.

But on Thursday, opponents of Proposition 8 said they don't think there are enough outstanding votes on their side to defeat the measure. The latest tally from the Secretary of State shows the initiative winning with 52 percent of the vote.

Proposition 8 amends the state constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman.

Lawyers for the No on 8 campaign already have filed lawsuits to invalidate the vote.
