Crowds Gather To Protest Gay Marriage Ban Ruling

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) ― More than 1,500 protesters are gathered at a rally in West Hollywood, expressing their opposition to the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold the state's gay marriage ban.

Police said Tuesday that the rally has been peaceful, with no arrests reported. Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore estimated the crowd could be up to 2,000 people.

Some of the protesters are carrying American flags and signs that read, "California Needs Love Not Hate," and "Gays on Strike."

Physician Mark Katz, who attended the rally with his husband, says he feels "enraged, ashamed of living in a state that calls itself progressive."

Several other gay marriage rallies were held Tuesday, including one in Santa Ana that drew an estimated 600 people. No arrests were reported.
