At least three people were arrested Friday night as 2,000 same-sex marriage supporters demonstrated against the passage of Proposition 8 in Long Beach.
Just before 10 p.m. the march came full circle to Broadway and Redondo Avenues, and three people were detained on suspicion of inciting a riot.
The march had paused earlier in front of Hamburger Mary's, 740 E. Broadway Ave., a national franchise that actively markets to the gay community.
"What brings me out here is the hope and inspiration that I have for equality in this country," a protester told KCAL9's Mary Beth McDade. "I'm provided the ability to march in order to show my brothers and sisters across the world and across this state that it is possible to stand up for your right in order to create it."
Supporters of Proposition 8, which defined marriage as only between a man and a woman, were also out with signs. They stood on the opposite side of the street.
By 10 p.m., authorities moving to end the demonstration were met with resistance. Protestors were urged to move on or face arrest.
Long Beach police and Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies maintained the crowds and kept people on the sidewalks, preventing traffic snarls like those that occurred during previous protests in Westwood and West Hollywood.
Another rally criticizing the passage of Proposition 8 is scheduled for Saturday in Silver Lake.
