With fuel prices at record highs, about 17 percent more Californians are running out of gasoline on freeways this year compared to 2007, according to figures released Tuesday by the Allstate Motor Club.
Drivers stalled on the freeway shoulders called Allstate for fuel delivery 606 times during the first five months of 2008, according to an Allstate statement.
"We can't directly correlate this rise in the number of people running out of gas to the rise in prices at the pump, but anecdotally we know that consumers are trying hard to stretch their dollar and sometimes that means stretching fuel into fumes," Phil Telgenhoff of Allstate said.
"Drivers should remember running out of gas on the highway can be a lot more than an inconvenience; it can be hazardous."
Allstate urged motorists whose cars are sputtering to pull off the road, well out of the flow of traffic, and to stay inside until it's safe to get out.
