Man Arrested For Beating, Raping Woman, 73
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (CBS) ―
A man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of beating and raping a 73-year-old woman who had been rummaging for cans in Garden Grove, police said.
Patrick Daniel Piceno, 21, was linked to the assault through DNA, Garden Grove Police Lt. Mike Handfield said. Police say they began investigating Piceno in connection with the May 31 attack because of statements he allegedly made to another person of his possible involvement.
Piceno was arrested Tuesday on a $15,000 domestic violence warrant involving his then-girlfriend and a DNA sample was taken at that point.
The sample came back to a match Thursday. Piceno was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and forcible rape and is being held on $1 million bail. He's expected to be arraigned Monday, Handfield said.
Piceno had recently been living with his family in Lake Elsinore, but resided within a quarter-mile of the scene of the attack, in the 13500 block of Harbor Boulevard, when it occurred.
The victim was found in the early morning hours in a trash bin enclosure in a business complex at the southeast corner of Harbor Boulevard and Trask Avenue. She was hospitalized after the attack and was treated for severe physical and emotional trauma.
The woman would collect aluminum cans in the early morning hours to earn extra money and was doing so when she was attacked, Handfield said.
