At least two people were killed in a massive pileup of up to 100 vehicles on a foggy freeway just south of Fresno Saturday morning.
The California Highway Patrol says at least nine big rigs were among the vehicles involved in the collision on northbound Highway 99.
Authorities say one adult and one child were killed. Northbound traffic remains backed up for several miles as investigators combed the wreckage scattered along the freeway.
Patches of dense fog had cut visibility to as little as two feet when the chain reaction began around 7:45 a.m.
Rescuers had to extract several people trapped in the wreckage, and paramedics transported more than three dozen injured patients to the hospital.
