Fred Jordan Missions' 65th Annual Family Christmas

LOS ANGELES About 10,000 underprivileged children and their families attended Fred Jordan Missions' 65th annual Family Christmas Celebration today on Skid Row, where 50,000 toys were given away, according to the mission.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse, along with TV personality Leeza Gibbons greeted the children, and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus led the children and moms to giveaway tables where the toys and warm children's clothing were distributed. Each mother got a Christmas dinner food bag.

Entertainment included musicians and carolers.

Volunteer elves from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Walt Disney Co., Teamsters union, Deloitte & Touche, Galpin Motors, All Access Apparel, Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., Allstate Insurance, Kaplan College, Pathway Christian Fellowship, Toys for Tots, Regency Lighting, Los Angeles Community College District, Pepperdine University, Glendale College, Barbara Walden, Vision L.A. and Woodcrest School as well as others baked cookies, played with the children and distributed gifts.

Because of the economic downturn, donations are down by 35 percent at the same time the number of impoverished people coming to the mission for help has increased by almost 50 percent, according to mission officials.

The Fred Jordan Mission also announced a Box of Hope food drive to provide Christmas dinners for impoverished families. Each tax-deductible donation of $25 will provide a Christmas dinner to a needy family, and an additional $25 will provide new toys and warm socks for the children.
