Senators Urge Bush To Issue Disaster Declaration

The disaster declaration would be in response to the wildfires in Southern California.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Senator Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and 39 members of the state's congressional delegation urged President Bush today to issue a federal disaster declaration in response to the wildfires in Southern California.

The legislators wrote a letter in support of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's request -- made Monday -- for a disaster declaration to provide federal relief funds for areas impacted by wildfires that have scorched thousands of acres and leveled hundreds of homes.

Schwarzenegger's request specifically asked for federal aid through Individual Assistance, Public Assistance, Hazard Mitigation and other disaster- assistance programs for residents of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara and San Bernardino counties. He also requested U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loans and funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Emergency Loan Program.

In a letter signed by Feinstein and Boxer, both D-Calif., and 39 other congressional members, the lawmakers wrote that a disaster declaration "will provide the essential federal resources needed not only to save the lives, homes and livelihoods of Californians, but also to help people recover and rebuild when these fires are finally extinguished."
