A gang member Thursday was sentenced to 110 years to life in prison for opening fire on an SUV in the Harbor Gateway area and striking a 6-year-old boy in the head.
Ernesto Murillo, 26, pleaded guilty March 4 to three counts of attempted murder, five counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting at an inhabited vehicle. He also admitted gang and gun use allegations.
During the sentencing hearing, Murillo said he did not deserve any leniency, and the judge called the shooting a "senseless crime."
The case stemmed from a March 4, 2008, shooting in which the boy, who was riding in the SUV with five adults and two other children, was critically injured.
He appeared in court today with a big scar on his head.
Family members had been headed to a car auction and were on Halldale Avenue near 227th Street when Murillo flashed gang signs and opened fire on the vehicle.
Murillo was arrested by Los Angeles police the day after the shooting has been jailed since his arrest.
