A gang member and a recruit pleaded not guilty to opening fire on a family in a sport utility vehicle, critically wounding a 6-year-old boy.
Ernesto Murillo and Ismael Torres each entered the pleas Monday to nine felony counts in connection with the March 4 attempted murder of Lavareya Elzy, who is still hospitalized with a bullet in his head.
The boy was in an SUV with his family in the Harbor Gateway area when the 25-year-old Murillo, a member of the Eastside Torrance gang, and 26-year-old Torres, believed to be a newer recruit, allegedly opened fire.
They are also charged with assault for shooting at Elzy's family members. Each charge carries allegations that the crimes were gang-related.
Deputy District Attorney John Lonergan says the defendants each face up to 60 years to life in prison and they remain in jail with bail set at $2 million each.
