Zoo Euthanizes Famous Elephant

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) ― An Asian elephant famed for its appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson has been euthanized at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.

The 40-year-old elephant named Carol had been suffering for several years from a joint disease in her legs and inflammation in her feet.

Keepers monitoring the animal's condition say her quality of life had started to deteriorate.

Jeff Andrews, the park's animal care manager, says "we did everything we could for Carol and it was a very difficult decision we made."

Carol arrived from Thailand as a calf in 1968 and lived at the zoo until 1978, when she was moved to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido. She lived there with five other Asian elephants.

The elephant appeared with conservationist Joan Embery, a former ambassador for the zoo, on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the 1970s.
