Animal Control Finds 155 Dead Cats In Pomona Home

POMONA (AP) ― Animal control officers rescued dozens of cats from a Pomona home where they found 155 dead animals stuffed into homemade coffins.

Florence Handley, 81, and her son were cited for animal cruelty.

Inland Valley Humane Society Supervisor Brian Sampson says Handley runs a cat adoption service and questions raised during a recent inspection led officers to search her home Thursday.

Sampson says officers took away 17 sick cats and left another 69 cats, two rats and two rabbits under supervision. However, five of the cats were so sick they had to be destroyed.

Officers also found 155 cats in homemade caskets in a garage.

Handley says they died of natural causes.
