Student Assaulted On El Camino College Campus

TORRANCE El Camino College students were urged to take precautions Monday after someone allegedly attempted to sexually assault a student on campus.

The student was walking alone about 6:45 p.m. Friday to her vehicle in the Lot F Lower parking structure at the college when someone approached her from behind, covered her mouth and touched her thigh, campus police chief Michael Trevis said in a statement.

The victim was unable to provide a description or even confirm the attacker's gender but said the attacker was wearing white Nike tennis shoes and reeked of cigarette smoke, Trevis said.

A campus alert urges students "be alert" and "use the buddy system or the Campus Courtesy shuttle" rather than walking alone.

This is the third such attack since last November, although campus police say the incidents are unrelated.

Campus police have installed nine new surveillance cameras and special emergency phones to enhance campus safety.
