Suspect Sought In El Camino College Sexual Assault

TORRANCE, Calif. (CBS) ―

Police asked for the public's help on Thursday in the search for a man who sexually assaulted a 20-year-old female student at knifepoint on the campus of El Camino College.

The crime occurred about 7 p.m. Tuesday, said Ann M. Garten of El Camino College.

The suspect was described as being 5 feet 8, possibly in his 20s, wearing black sweatpants, a hooded sweat jacket, a ski mask and one dark glove.

Such crimes are rare on the campus, Garten said. Anyone with information was asked to call 310-660-3100.

According to the Daily Breeze, the attack occurred outside the women's gym, leaving the victim crying on the ground. Police said she dialed 911 to summon help. A campus public safety officer found her in tears.

"The commission of the crime is so savage, we just think this guy is perhaps a habitual offender," El Camino College Interim Police Chief Steve Port told the newspaper.

The man somehow committed the crime undetected on a 6-foot-wide path on the west side of the gym, and police hoped that someone in the area knows something that can help track him down.

"He could have been in some degree of lesser disguise prior to the crime," Port said.

The victim spent Tuesday night in the hospital but was home the next day. Detectives plan to ask her to meet with a sketch artist.

Police officers increased their presence on campus and spread word of the attack through e-mails to all students and employees. They also posted fliers around campus.
