The El Cajon City Council has approved an ordinance banning smoking in most public places in the city.
A city spokeswoman says the ban -- which passed unanimously -- will take effect September 14th.
Under the law, smoking on city sidewalks will be forbidden, while smoking outside office buildings will be permitted in designated areas.
El Cajon has already outlawed smoking in parks and also requires businesses that sell tobacco products to get a city license.
